BMI Calculator India: What Your Score Actually Means for Indian Body Types

Standard BMI charts under-report risk for Indian adults. Use the correct South Asian BMI thresholds and learn which metrics matter more than BMI alone.

If you have ever used a BMI calculator and found yourself labelled "overweight" despite feeling fit, the problem may be with the chart, not your body. Body Mass Index has a significant limitation especially relevant for Indian adults: it was developed primarily from data on European populations.

What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?

Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²

Standard classification:

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight
  • 25.0 to 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30.0 and above — Obese

Why Indian BMI Cut-Offs Are Different

Research from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and WHO consultation reports shows that people of South Asian descent experience significantly higher metabolic risk — including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and visceral fat accumulation — at lower BMI values than Western populations.

The revised recommendations for Indian adults:

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 to 22.9 — Normal weight (lower threshold than Western standard)
  • 23.0 to 24.9 — Overweight (at risk)
  • 25.0 and above — Obese (high risk)

This means an Indian adult with a BMI of 24 — classified "normal" on Western charts — may already be at elevated cardiometabolic risk. Fat distribution patterns in South Asians tend toward higher visceral (abdominal) fat even at lower total body weight.

Better Metrics to Track Alongside BMI

Waist Circumference

Waist circumference is one of the strongest predictors of visceral fat. For Indian adults:

  • Men: High risk above 90 cm
  • Women: High risk above 80 cm

Body Fat Percentage

Our free Body Fat Percentage Calculator uses the US Navy method to estimate fat percentage without specialist equipment.

Healthy ranges for Indian adults:

  • Men: 10–20%
  • Women: 20–30%

Lean Body Mass

Knowing your lean body mass helps you set accurate protein targets. Use our free Lean Body Mass Calculator.

Practical Action Plan

  1. Calculate your BMI using our free calculator — use 23.0 as your normal/overweight boundary if you are Indian
  2. Measure your waist and check against South Asian thresholds above
  3. Estimate your body fat percentage using our free calculator
