The Body Mass Index (BMI) was created in the 1830s. While it works well for analyzing large populations, it fails dramatically on an individual level, especially for anyone who strength trains.
The Problem with BMI
BMI only considers height and weight. It cannot distinguish between 10 pounds of fat and 10 pounds of muscle. Consequently, many healthy, muscular individuals are categorized as "overweight" or "obese."
Better Calculators and Metrics
- Body Fat Percentage: Tools like DEXA scans or even simple skinfold calipers provide a much more accurate picture of body composition.
- Waist-to-Hip Ratio: A fantastic, simple calculator for metabolic health and cardiovascular risk.
- Lean Body Mass (LBM): Knowing your LBM helps you set accurate protein targets for muscle maintenance.
